Hair Growth Promoting Effects of Lavender Essential Oil
Hair loss is an embarrassing problem for both men and women. Your hair is your crown, and it's important for many of us to keep a full head of hair throughout our lives by any means possible. What if the best method was all natural Lavender Essential oil?
Studies have proven the power of Lavender essential oil to regrow hair faster and fuller than other oils and substances. You might not have heard of these scientifically proven benefits because there is no way to patent essential oils, but the secret to wellness has and will always be access to natural plant derived food and oils.
I found a 2016 study called "Hair Growth-Promoting Effects of Lavender Oil in C57BL/6 Mice" where lavender was tested against placebos and other oils to determine quality of hair growth over 4 weeks:
"At week 4 of the experiment, there was significant increase in hair follicle number, hair follicle depth, and dermal thickness in the [lavender] groups, as compared to the [placebo] groups, which supported the morphological observation of the hair growth-promoting effect of LO." [1]
A previous study conducted in 1998 used a blend of thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood against a carrier placebo on subjects with alopecia areata. [2] This is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. This study showed that essential oils can promote hair growth by up to 44% after 7 months of treatment.
"The results show aromatherapy to be a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata. Treatment with these essential oils was significantly more effective than treatment with the carrier oil alone" [2]
How does Lavender EO do this?
Lavender is anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. This perhaps relieves the entire system, allowing the cells to live longer and for more to be produced at an accelerated rate.
Lavender relieves stress and anxiety through inhalation [3]. Stress has been known to cause hair loss. By stopping stress, the body can repair.
Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory system, the part of the brain connected to smell, including the nose and the brain. Molecules that enter the nose or mouth pass to the lungs, and from there, to other parts of the body.
As the molecules reach the brain, they affect limbic system, which is linked to the emotions, the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress, and hormone balance. In this way, essential oils can have a subtle, yet holistic effect on the body.
How to use Lavender oil for hair growth
We can gather that lavender essential oil can easily be used for hair growth with no harmful side effects, and there are many ways to use it.
- Add a few drops to your shampoo and conditioner or other hair products.
- Apply directly to the scalp and massage using fingers or comb to stimulate the follicles. Doing this daily should produce results over time.
- Diffuse the oil in water to relax your senses and stimulate your brain to regulate your hormones and other systems.
